How much are meme NFTs really worth? We all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, especially when it comes to art. I’m no art aficionado, and can’t say I understand any of the art genres much at all. But I can say for certainty I definitely DO NOT understand the meme NFT craze.
Before you say “OK Boomer”, let’s talk about the individual meme pieces and how much they sold for.
Overly Attached Girlfriend sold for 200ETH
Overly attached girlfriend, whose name is Laina Morris, made a video submission to a contest held by Justin Bieber in 2012. The video became a hit, and her image became a meme spread through the internet.
Although it brought her a lot of fame and attention, as well as some YouTube revenue, she also spoke about her struggles with pressure of content production and depression that came with it.
So, it’s really great that she got to sell her NFT for 200ETH, which is worth USD$705,000 as of today, if she hadn’t sold any of her ETH yet.
She’s going to have a bunch of overly attached boyfriends knocking down her door soon.
Bad luck Brian NFT sold for 20ETH
Next we come to Bad Luck Brian, who once went on a date with Overly Attached Girlfriend.
Bad luck Brian’s real name is Kyle Craven. I believe he sold his NFT first, and that it was he who guided Laina to sell her NFT! In contrast, his NFT only sold for 20ETH, but that’s still a decent chunk of change (USD$70,500 at today’s rate!).
Disaster Girl NFT sold for 180ETH
Up next, we have Disaster Girl. Don’t worry, the backstory behind this picture isn’t as nefarious as it looks.
Disaster Girl’s real name is Zoe Roth. When she was 4 (in 2005), her father (an amateur photographer) took her to watch a controlled burn (a fire intentionally started) in North Carolina. He asked her to turn back and smile, and the rest is history.
16 years later, this image has sold as an NFT for 180ETH (USD$635,000)!
If the 2017 crypto boom was characterized by ICOs, then the 2021 bull market can be summed up in 2 words. DeFI and NFTs.
I’m guessing the next big NFT to be sold will be Hide the Pain Harold. If he does mint his NFT, I think this will be a big one!
Like I said, art is in the eye of the beholder. You may say that it is simply a jpg, how can it be worth that much? To that, I say that a Monet painting is simply ink on some canvas, how can it be worth that much?
